No-Kill Policy
The Houlton Humane Society does not euthanize for space. We actively partner with other shelters and often do animal exchanges if those shelters can help us out, or the other way around.
Adoption Policy
The Houlton Humane Society is committed to finding "forever homes" for our animals, and this involves a formal adoption process. If you are interested in adopting an animal, please be prepared with the following information: Name, address, phone number, landlord's name and permission (if you rent), your veternarian's name if you have other animals, what animals you have and proof that they are spayed/neutered and up-to-date on shots. We also require 3 references to contact prior to adopting.
You will be required to spay/neuter the animal you are adopting. A form must be read and signed regarding this issue before you take the animal home. In certain circumstances, a $100.00 deposit will be required to hold until the surgery is complete and then the money will be sent back to you.
We do not believe dogs should live a life on a chain, therefore we only adopt to people who want an inside family dog. We do not adopt kittens out as barn cats. Barn cats are specifically labeled in the shelter.
Accepting Animals
The Houlton Humane Society can only accept owner animals when we have the space. We are here for stray and abandoned animals primarily. If you find a stray, contact your local Animal Control Officer or the police department. Due to space and funding constraints we can only take strays from the towns we contract with. If you are not sure if your town uses us for animal services, please contact the shelter.
