Houlton Humane Society

You are invited to a kitten shower hosted by students at the Houlton Higher Education Center. Friday, November 18th, 9 to 11 am. Fun, refreshments and prizes! Items needed for the babies: canned cat food, powdered formula for newborns, kitten toys, small kitten beds, heating pads, treats and cat litter. Also bring your used ink cartridges & cell phones. Location of event 18 Military Street - Houlton Higher Education Center. Many thanks to the students for hosting this event!

What to do when a skunk sprays my dog After being sprayed your dog will probably try to reach a familiar place, which is normally inside your house!1. If you go to the door, hear a frantic dog, and smell a skunk odor, DO NOT LET THEM IN! If you do, the odor will stick to everything and exponentially complicate the issue.2. Any windows that are open shut them immediately to reduce the odor from permeating the house.3. Let your dog settle down outside while you change into clothes you can throw out. If you have rubber gloves you'll need them too.4. Prior to going outside, you'll need: Vick's vapor rub, a leash, washcloth, shampoo supplies, towels, and a flashlight if it's dark. If it's winter and you turn the water off inside, don't forget to turn it on.5. Prepare a place to keep the dog. Places, in order of preference are: OUTSIDE (if it's not too cold), the garage, an unfinished basement, or bathroom. If you'll be keeping your dog inside, place plastic trash bags where you plan on leashing your dog overnight and move any absorbable material (anything you can't wipe down) away from the area. Make sure the drinking dish is nearby and you can secure a leashed dog in the location.6. If you have the Vick's, place some under your nose. It will reduce the pungent skunk odor.7. Once outside leash the dog and attempt to have your dog not rub against you.8. Bath time! Shampooing the dog will remove some of the skunk spray off; however, more baths will occur.9. A dog follows its nose, and a skunk aims for the face resulting in skunk odor being heavily concentrated around a dogs face. Use the washcloth to carefully clean the dogs face.10. Lots of soap and water is important.11. Check the dog very carefully for any scratches or bite marks. Skunks can carry rabies. If you find any bites or scratches, you should call your veterinarian.12. You can now continue to remove odor or towel dry the dog until you can obtain odor removal supplies.13. If you must bring the dog inside, do not let them touch anything. Keep them leashed until you finish the process.

FORMULA:  1 QUART 3% HYDROGEN PEROXIDE, 1/4 C BAKING SODA, 1 TEASPOON DAWN DISHWASHING DETERGENT

September 10th from 11 am to 5 pm the Houlton Humane Society will be hosting a fun event in Monument Park in Houlton.   Live bands, piano concert, adult and children's games, antique and classic car show, food booths, raffles, and much much more.   Come take a look at the beautiful cars, have a hot dog or some nachos or a piece of pizza, listen to some great music, maybe enter our "Minute to Win it" contest, stay around for hourly prizes and drawings, and just enjoy a fun day in the park with the family.  Your kids will love it, and feel free to bring your four legged children with you also!  Make sure those kids are on leash!

This is our third annual event and every year it gets better and better.  FREE admission to the park!

Also joining us will be Schwans Home Sales, they will be hosting a truck load sale to benefit the Shelter.   You can go on-line to www.schwans.com and pre-order your ice cream or pizza or whatever your favorite Schwans food is and pick it up the day of the event or just stop by the truck during the sale and pick up some treats for the family.

There is so much going on this day and we are so excited!  We  hope to see you there!

New fundraiser for the shelter, going until August 1st.  Select Avon items in the fundraiser program will net a 70% return to the shelter.  Other items in the Avon books also available.  Call the shelter for more details on how you can purchase some of your favorite Avon products (it's not too early to start stocking up for Christmas) and earn money for your favorite shelter at the same time!

There will be a yard sale at the animal shelter from 10 am to 1 pm on Saturday July 16th, weather permitting.  If you have items you would like to donate, you may drop them off at the  Shelter or call at 532-2862 and let someone know you need them picked up.

You may also drop off items to the Varney agency, 9 Katahdin lane (across from Tim Horton's).   No clothing or electronics please!

Houlton Humane will have a table near the Temple Cinema on Friday night, July 1st, during Midnight Madness.  We will be selling raffle tickets for a 55 inch flat screen TV valued at over $1500, for a Trek Dual Sport Kaitai Bike valued at over $600 and for a limited edition print by Esther Orr Faulkner - Moose in field - priceless! 

Many thanks to the Key Bank volunteers who came out to the shelter to help wiht our spring projects!  Seems like every year when they come it rains but they work through the rain and help us spiff up the grounds.  We really appreciate their help!
